History and Background
The Honors Program was founded by the Board of Trustees of the State Center Community College District in 1987, and was named in honor of Leon S. Peters, who endowed a trust to assist in funding the enrichment activities and other special features of the program. Peters was a local entrepreneur and industrialist, who owned and operated several local enterprises, most notably Valley Foundry. Peters was famous for his philanthropy and his efforts to sponsor talented local students. Peters had a vision of a community college program that would prepare local students to gain admission and transfer to the most selective universities. Since 1987, the Leon S. Peters Honors Program has prepared local students for successful admission to many of the most selective and prestigious institutions in the state and nation. Graduating Honors students have also qualified for numerous competitive transfer scholarships. The program and its students have received state, regional, and national awards, such as the All U.S.A. Academic Team Awards and the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society's Five Star and Hallmark Awards.
Mission and Purpose:
Your Invitation to Excellence
In 1988, Fresno City College implemented the Leon S. Peters Honors Program. The Leon S. Peters Honors Program at Fresno City College provides an enriched educational experience to recognize and meet the needs of academically excellent students. Students who qualify and are accepted to enter the Honors Program benefit from the experience, regardless of major, because of a specially selected curriculum that is set within the framework of the transfer program of all University of California and California State University campuses. Honors courses are innovative and reflect the instructors' interest in and commitment to the program's academic, intellectual, cultural, and social goals. Special Honors sections of courses usually have fewer students per section than other regular classes and feature enrichment components, greater depth of content and intensity of methods. Honors classes are taught by specially selected, experienced, and highly qualified faculty. The entire program can be completed in four semesters. Entrance into the program is competitive and highly selective.
Special Features That Enrich Honors Study
Honors Colloquium Courses
Honors colloquium courses are special one-unit, interdisciplinary classes designed to bring Honors Program students together to explore topics from multiple perspectives. Honors colloquia are one of the main ways the faculty have to enrich the educational experience of the Honors students.
The general education transfer courses that comprise the core of the Honors Program are paired and then linked by a colloquium which is team taught and strives to be multidisciplinary. Students are asked to take at least three colloquia, each with a different emphasis: science, social science, humanities, and business/economics. A fifth colloquium is also encouraged. This one relies on and develops the annually-announced Phi Theta Kappa study topic. A sixth colloquium is the Summer Honors Leadership Institute colloquium.
Colloquia are expected to develop critical and creative thinking ability. The topics or themes selected usually allow students the opportunity to integrate the knowledge obtained from Honors courses. They are taught in a seminar format and require both written and oral presentations.
Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. The organization stresses scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service on campus and in the community.
Among the ways the national organization supports local chapters and instructional programs is the annual development of a study topic for the subsequent year. Renowned scholars prepare the course outline, develop the bibliography and instructional support materials, and at a week-long institute provide in-service training for faculty who will be teaching the PTK topic. With its link to Phi Theta Kappa, the Leon S. Peters Honors Program at Fresno City College is uniquely positioned to offer Honors students a fifth type of multidisciplinary colloquium experience as well as other ways to nurture student commitment to continuing excellence in scholarship. In addition, Honors students are afforded opportunities for leadership, socializing and community service.
