Application Process

Dental Hygiene Program - Next Application Period:

February 1-29, 2024

Selected applicants will start the new Bachelor of Science Program in Fall 2024 upon final approval from the chancellor's office. Program fees and course requirements will reflect the change from the traditional associate degree to the new bachelors degree program in Dental Hygiene. More details, including increased fees per unit, will be posted upon final state chancellor's office approval. 

Program requirements have been updated effective for students applying in Spring 2024.  Please see "Step 2" below for the current requirements.

 

After successful completion of the two-year Dental Hygiene Program as well as completion of all general education (CSU/IGETC), and graduation requirements, students will earn an Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Fresno City College. Transfer opportunities are available for students who would like to pursue advanced degrees.

Accepted applicants will be required to complete four hours of observation in a dental facility prior to June 30, 2024 in order to be enrolled in the program. 

All students, if accepted into the program, will be subject to the policies of the Dental Hygiene student handbook. Students should be aware that participation in the program requires adherence to infection control policies including the requirement that immunizations are current.

Complete each step below in order to apply to the Dental Hygiene program.

Complete online Fresno City College application.

All applicants to the Dental Hygiene program must apply for admission to Fresno City College to obtain a SCCCD Student ID number prior to applying to the program.  When applying you will be asked to declare a major, please select Pre-Allied Health.  Once accepted into the program your major will be changed to Dental Hygiene. 

Application requirements:

  • Completion of all ten (10) prerequisite courses
  • Complete CSU or IGETC General Education pattern
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Completion of 60 transferable semester units

Completion of General Education Requirements: 

All students entering the program must have completed a transfer General Education Pattern, either the CSU or IGETC.

For the Spring 2024 application period only, at time of application, the general education courses, 60 transferable units, and the transfer level math course (Math 11) may be in progress. All other pre-requisite courses must be complete at the time of application.

Beginning in Spring 2025, all pre-requisite courses, the 60 transferable units, and the CSU or IGETC general education courses must be completed prior to application. 

Program Prerequisite Courses:

Completion of science prerequisites with a letter grade of C or better:

  • BIO 20-Human Anatomy and BIO 22-Human Physiology or BIOL 21A-Human Anatomy & Physiology I and BIOL 21B-Human Anatomy & Physiology II
  • CHEM 3A - Introductory General Chemistry or college equivalent
  • CHEM 3B - Introductory Organic & Biological Chemistry
  • BIOL 31 - Microbiology 

Completion of non-science prerequisites with a letter grade of C or better:

  • ENGL 1A - Reading and Composition
  • MATH 11 - Elementary Statistics or MATH 3A - College Algebra or transfer level math course
  • PSY 2 - General Psychology
  • SOC 1A - Introduction to Sociology
  • COMM 1 or 2 - Introduction to Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication

Notes:

  • A cumulative GPA calculation will be done using all college coursework documented on all college/university transcripts.
  • Grade points and units will be tallied from all college work attempted.
  • "In Progress" courses are not accepted (see note above for 2024 application period only). 
  • Advanced Placement (AP) courses: Only AP English and AP Math may be used to meet the pre-requisite requirements for this program.  AP courses for other pre-requisites will not be accepted.
  • Science courses with in-person or online lab are acceptable.

Applicants with courses from outside State Center Community College District

Applicants who would like to use pre-requisite or general education courses completed from outside of SCCCD should meet with a Fresno City College Counselor.  The counselor will assist in determining whether the Course Substitution Petition process needs to be completed.  This process should be completed before applying to the Registered Nursing Programs or any Allied Health Program.  Students with courses from a California public community college or university may use the following links to determine equivalency of courses from outside institutions with Fresno City College:

If a course substitution petition is needed, courses must be evaluated by each department for possible approval.  The required documents to initiate the review of a course are a copy of the official transcript and the course syllabus.  This is a lengthy process and must be done at least 2-3 months prior to submitting an application.  All approved FCC course substitutions must be submitted with application.


Applicants using Foreign Education courses

Students who have completed courses outside of the United States must have foreign transcripts evaluated by an evaluation service approved by Fresno City College.  Please meet with a Fresno City College Counselor.

The Dental Hygiene Program Application must be completed and submitted during the application period.  The upcoming application period is February 1-29, 2024.

A complete application must contain the following:

  1. Online Dental Hygiene Program Application. Please list all colleges attended on the application including Fresno City College and all affiliated campuses.  Failure to list all colleges previously attended may result in your application being denied. If you submitted an application during a previous application period you must complete and submit a new application in order to be considered in the next lottery.

  2. Submit one (1) official college/university transcript from each school attended outside of SCCCD.  If you have attended Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College, or Madera Community College you do not need to submit transcripts from those institutions. All pre-requisite coursework must be complete at the time of application and grades must be posted on the transcripts. If you have previously submitted an external transcript to FCC Admissions & Records and have not taken any new courses at the institution, you do not need to resubmit the transcript.  

Transcripts

Transcripts can be submitted one of two ways:

1. E-Transcripts can be sent by the institution, not the student to transcripts@fresnocitycollege.edu

OR

2. Sealed official transcripts can be mailed by the institution or the student to the following address:

If applicable to the applicant, submit the following documents by uploading them to the online Program Application:

  • Veteran or a spouse of a veteran requesting veteran preference requires submission of a copy of the DD214 from.

  • Course Substitutions - Include a copy of approved Course Substitution(s) for prerequisite and General Education courses.

  • AP Credit - College Board Results

  1. After submitting the Dental Hygiene Application a confirmation email will be sent to your SCCCD student email address.  You may need to check your junk folder if you don't see it in the Inbox.
  2. All applicants will be notified of their lottery status by email, to the SCCCD student email.  A response is required for those who are selected into the program.  If you are not selected then you do not need to respond.
  3. Check "Important Dates to Follow" for response deadlines.
  4. All communication from the Dental Hygiene Program will be sent to your SCCCD Student email.

Upon selection into the Dental Hygiene Program students must confirm acceptance to participate in the program and must attend a mandatory program orientation.  Information about the orientation will be provided at the time of selection.  Failure to attend will result in forfeiture of program placement.

Upon admission to the program all immunizations, health exams, CPR requirements, transportation verification, consents, etc. must be met prior to beginning the Dental Hygiene program.

Lottery

Fresno City College utilizes a computerized statistical lottery selection process for admission into the Dental Hygiene Program.  The Lottery Process is used in response to more eligible applicants than enrollment space to the Allied Health Programs.  The lottery is student driven, which means the student is responsible for supplying all transcripts and supplemental documentation required. To be included in the Lottery, the program application must be completed and all transcripts and supplemental documents included or it will be considered incomplete and processing will be terminated.  All qualified applications received before the stated deadline will be treated equally regardless of the submission date.

All applicants who meet the application requirements are included in the lottery.  After the lottery is complete, applications are evaluated to confirm eligibility. Applicants are then notified of selection into the program.

All applicants will be notified of their Lottery Status by email sent only to the SCCCD student email account. It is the student's responsibility to read and respond to notifications within stated deadlines.

It is your responsibility to complete all major and graduation requirements. If you are unsure about these requirements please meet with a counselor.

Students must keep the Allied Health, P.E., & Athletics Division Office informed of any changes in your name, address, and/or phone number.
