At a news conference on June 28th in the Fresno City College’s Student Senate Chambers, college president Dr. Ned Doffoney introduced Ed Madec (MADD-ehk) as the Rams twelfth men’s basketball coach in school history.
The appointment was officially approved by the State Center Community College District Board of Trustees at yesterday’s afternoon meeting.
“I am very pleased to welcome Ed Madec into the Fresno City College family. His emphasis on student achievement and his focus on team success are in full alignment with the goals of City College. I know he will be warmly welcomed by the entire community and I look forward to another successful season of Fresno City Rams basketball,” said Doffoney.
Madec, 33, comes to FCC from College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif. He was Dr. Doffoney’s selection over two other final candidates.
“I am excited about being part of such a wonderful college and community. Athletics director Susan Yates has a tremendous reputation. FCC is committed to winning and this is a great opportunity for me,” said Madec.
This past season, Madec, after winning a second Golden Valley Conference title in four years, guided the Eagles to the Northern California playoffs. Ironically, the season ended with a 109-96 defeat against the Rams in the FCC gym. Siskiyous finished with a 27-5 mark. Madec’s overall record in four seasons at Siskiyous was 83-38. His teams run the same offense as that of previous FCC coach, Vance Walberg.
Eleven of his players were on the academic honor roll for the Fall 2004 semester and he has served as an advisor for financial aid and academics. Madec has also been instrumental in youth and team basketball camps.
His coaching and teaching philosophy is designed to develop family values, integrity and discipline within the team, as well as each individual. The concept is to help further the success and productivity of the student-athlete as he/she enters society. In preparing student-athletes for the next level, Madec strives to create an atmosphere that is comparable to the four-year level.
Prior to his arrival at College of the Siskiyous, where Madec was two-time GVC “Coach of the Year,” he was an assistant coach at Chico State University from 1999-2001 and assisted at College of the Sequoias during the 2001-02 season.
After graduating from Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, Madec enrolled at Sonoma State University where he earned a bachelor of arts in kinesiology. As a player, he led his team in rebounds and assists during his junior and senior seasons. He received a master’s degree from Chico State University in physical education.
Madec succeeds Walberg who accepted the men’s head basketball coach position at Pepperdine University in April. In four years at FCC, Walberg posted a 133-11 record with one state championship, one state runner-up and one tie for third. He also guided the Rams to four consecutive Central Valley Conference championships.
Madec and his wife, Maija (MIGH-yuh), currently reside in Dunsmuir.
