Men's Soccer

Eric Solberg - Soccer Coach

Fresno City College has a long history of offering one of the most competitive community college men’s soccer programs in California. The program is currently led by Head Coach Eric Solberg. Solberg came to Fresno City College in 1999 replacing Bill Neal, the program’s founder, who retired.

Solberg has won six conference titles and has advanced to the State playoffs all eight years. In addition, the team has advanced to the Final Four State Championships four times in his tenure. Since the inception of the NSCAA/Adidas National poll in 2000, the RAMS have finished in the National Top 20 every year. Fresno City College’s highest ranking by NSCAA/Adidas came in 2002 when they finished No. 4 in the country. Solberg was also awarded the Western Region United States Coach of the Year in 2002.

Solberg grew up playing soccer in Fresno and was fortunate enough to play six years for Jose Elgorriaga, a former head coach at Fresno State. At the end of his playing days at Bullard High School, Solberg received scholarships in both baseball and soccer. He chose baseball and played for Fresno State as well as the Kansas City Royals organization. After his six year hiatus from Soccer, Solberg returned to the game he loved and coached and played on different teams in the Fresno area. All totaled, Solberg has spent almost thirty years in the sport of soccer as a coach, referee, player and administrator.

Solberg’s record at Fresno City College in his eight years is 132-31-32. His conference record is 59-10-16.

He and his wife Paige have two daughters, Erica, 23, and Kelly, 18.

HISTORY

The RAMS are coming off a 16-2-7 campaign, a State Final Four and a No. 7 National ranking. The RAMS are only returning one starter, former Clovis West star Andrew Feld. FCC Soccer Player“We lost a lot and we need Andrew to come up big this year,” Solberg says. “We have a number of guys such as Silvestre Arias, Diego Alvarez, Tyler Muscianes, and Jarred Silagin who have seen a lot of action but essentially we are very young in terms of experience.” Some of the incoming players who hope to make an immediate impact are Alan Vu , Clovis High; Trae Garton, Clovis West; Pablo Segura, Madera High; Mitch Ebner, Bullard High; and Hugo Gonzales, Clovis High. Our upcoming team is excited that two former players, Nick Andersen and Onesta Francis will be assisting this season.

What the 2007 season will bring for Fresno City College men’s soccer is unknown. Solberg says: “We have very good team speed but we lost so much from last year that I’m concerned. Our league is so difficult that it prepares us for the playoffs. I just hope we are ready early and we have a chance to compete with everybody at the State level. This year will be interesting.”
