She was the only sophomore on this year’s Fresno City College women’s golf team, but Meghan Olsen (San Joaquin Memorial High) was tee to green in providing leadership and skill.
The Central Valley Conference Player of the Year, Olsen had nothing but praise for her younger teammates as they combined to grow as golfers and friends. This led to a fourth consecutive third-place finish at the California Community College Championships which were held at Fresno’s Sunnyside Country Club on Nov. 12-13.
“As a team I was really, really pleased with the way our season turned out. We won conference and I was a bit disappointed we didn’t win Nor Cal, but we made it to state and that was our goal from the beginning of the year. I loved the girls on the team and I couldn’t be more proud of ‘em,” said Olsen.
Was she a vocal leader or one by example? “I’d probably say both. I work really hard on my game and that’s probably rubbed off on a few of the other girls. We talk while we’re practicing and make jokes and stuff, but, while we’re out there we do get down to business. I’d say I was probably a little bit more vocal just because I was the only sophomore and they hadn’t been through this before. I’m glad to take that position because I would do anything for these girls,” she said. Olsen’s dream job would be as a pro golfer, but she’s realistic and wants to be an attorney. Although it’s not definite where she’ll transfer to from FCC, Meghan and her family are very close. In fact, her younger sister may come to FCC and play golf, something Olsen sagely recommends to other potential recruits.
“I’m so happy that I came to FCC because 1) my game wasn’t in shape to go to a four-year school and, 2) I wasn’t mature enough to handle sports and schoolwork at a university. I took two years and worked on my game and I’ve improved so much from last year. I would say work on your game and learn time management,” she said. Olsen also praised head coach Rhonda Williams. “She is such a great coach. She’s awesome and she’s always positive out on the golf course. She’d see me with my head down after making a bogey and say ‘It’s okay Meg, go get ‘em on the next hole.’” In turn, Williams teed up props to Olsen and assistant coach Cindy Vining. “Meghan was definitely our team leader all season. She kept them together and just kept things running. She had the experience the others didn’t have and it made a huge impact on our team.” They’re the ones who go out there and play. Cindy is the one who works with them on their golf game and I attribute a lot of our success to her.” It looks like a fine future for Olsen and FCC women’s golf. “I know Meghan wants to continue playing golf in college, said Williams. “We’re talking with Fresno State right now to see if they have any openings. I know that’s where she’d like to go, but there’s a lot of options available to her if that doesn’t work out. Olsen is highly confident about what her freshman teammates will do in 2008. “Oh, yeah! I’m telling everyone to ‘watch out’ because, you know what? If they keep improving and improving it’s amazing what they’re going to do next year!”
