PLACEMENT TEST DATES AND TIMES
"Please come 30 minutes early. There will be no late admissions."

The FCC placement tests are used to determine your English and Math skills. They are also used to determine which of these courses you should be placed in so that they meet your academic needs. Just as we don’t want you in classes that are too easy for you—that is a waste of your time and money—we do not want you in classes that are too difficult—that leads to serious frustration and course withdrawal or bad grades. For this reason, we strongly recommend all incoming students take the placement test. For more information see: Placement Testing FAQ

Both English tests start as listed above, but the ESL test takes longer. Students taking the ESL test will have to plan to take the math test on another day. Please come 30 minutes early to do paperwork.

Assessment Center

The FCC Assessment Center is located at the northeast end of the Library Building. Access to the center is through an outside door which faces the large fountain. The Assessment Center administers a variety of tests to students and potential students. Test candidates should report for testing with a

  • photo ID (Driver’s License, school or employee ID, Passport, etc.)
  • #2 pencil
  • have a social security card, or know their social security number.

Space is limited, so come early. The center opens 30 minutes prior to the posted start time so you can ensure yourself a seat and have the time to fill in our required paper work. "We do not take any reservations". Please check the following information and schedules to ensure you are taking the right test.

Testing Information

While both the native speaker and English-as-a-Second- Language tests begin at the listed time, the ESL test takes 2 hours, so many test takers come back for the Math test on another day.

All Placement tests are administered on Scantron forms, your Placement results will be available about 15 minutes after the test is completed. Individuals can retest after 3 months if desired.

A Sample test is available at placement test sample.doc.

English-As-A-Second-Language (ESL) Testing

Students for whom English is their second language or who have lived in the United States for less than 10 years are advised to take the CELSA test. It is administered at the same time as the native speaker test and takes up to 1hr 45 min. It has 75 English grammar questions and 35 reading questions. (The Math test for ESL students is the same as the native speaker Math test.)

Ability To Benefit (ATB)

Individuals who have not completed high school, earned their GED, or passed the High School Equivalency and apply for Federal Financial Aid (SEOG, BEOG, Work Study, etc.) must pass the Ability to Benefit (ATB) exam. The test measures an individual’s basic language and math skills. Unlike the placement test, you can fail the ATB test. (No pass = No federal aid.)

There are severe restrictions on re-testing so consult with Assessment Center staff if your placement scores are low for guidance before taking the ATB exam.

Testing takes two hours. The upcoming ATB schedule is:

Computer Familiarity Test

Individuals seeking an AA/AS degree must complete a computer class (even if none is required by their major), or successfully pass the Computer Familiarity Test. The CFT has 3 sections: a section of 50 multiple choice questions on general computer knowledge, a Hands-on Word processing exercise, and a Hands-on Spread Sheet exercise. Students must score 75 or better on each section to pass. Cost: $20.00. Results: Available the next day. There is an alternative form available for individuals who need to retest. The Computer Familiarity Test cannot serve as an IS 15 prerequisite, but does however meet the graduation requirement.

The Computer Familiarity Test will be administered at any of the English Placement Tests (i.e. 8:00, 10:30, 12:00, 2:00 and 5:30). Please show up early enough as only 30 examinees will be admitted. If you have any questions please call 442-8280.

Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS)

The majority of students being receiving services by the DSPS office need to take the FCC Assessment Test. (This is not the one-on-one diagnostic testing which is conducted by DSPS, but a placement test—how much do you know so you can be placed into the appropriate classes.) Since many DSPS students need special accommodations to ensure their placement results truly reflect their skill level, special test dates and times have been established to ensure DSPS students can receive the accommodations their counselor has recommended.

If you are a DSPS student or think you may be eligible for DSPS services, please contact DSPS (2nd floor Student Services Bldg. or at 442-8237/8238) prior to testing. We must know what accommodations you are to be given.

Students must have an authorization note from a DSPS Counselor to test on these dates.

How Do I Get My Results?

All test results (Placement, ATB, DSPS, and Computer Familiarity) will now be available the following day at the Counseling Center.

Cost to FCC students: The Placement, Ability to Benefit and DSPS tests are free. Students taking the Computer Familiarity test will need to pay $20.00.

Retesting:

  • There is a 3 month wait to retake the Placement test. The English-As-A-Second-Language test is not a duplicate of the Native Speaker test and can be taken immediately if desired.
  • There is a 2 week wait to retake the Ability to Benefit test.
  • There is no wait to retake the Computer Familiarity test.
  • DSPS retesting is determined by the student’s Counselor.

Registration To Go / Registration Express

Test Results for High School Students: Generally a high school student’s results are available two days after on-high-school-campus testing through their Counselor’s office or Career Center office. Students who test at FCC should wait for their results. Results are not mailed.
