CalWORKs Program
The Fresno City College (FCC) CalWORKs Program has operated as a joint venture of the college and the Fresno County Employment and Temporary Assistant (E&TA) since 1987. It is a grant-funded program on the FCC campus to provide CalWORKs students with academic counseling, weekly classes and individual plan assessments. In August 1997, AB1542 established CalWORKs as California's version of welfare reform. AB1542 describes the activities of agencies to assist current welfare recipients in their movement towards employment. With the passage of Senate Bill 1104 in 2003-2004 CalWORKs students may be able to participate in education and training for up to 60 months. All CalWORKs participants are required to engage in a combination of work related activities for a minimum of 32 hours a week as described in their individual welfare to work plan. Beginning July 1, 2006 state requirement will be 40 hours a week. This plan may include attendance at a California Community College in a program that the county welfare department agrees will help lead the participant towards unsubsidized employment. The college must affirm the student's participation is satisfactory.
Each year the program serves several hundred CalWORKs students who are mainstreamed into FCC’s Vocational Training Programs. FCC has stepped up to the challenge of the latest CalWORKs time-limit requirements. As a career/employment training institution, FCC along with its CalWORKs program has been able to develop several short-term training programs. These programs include Computerized Accounting, Business Office Assistant, Medical Billing Clerk, Full Charge Bookkeeper, Child Development, Auto Mechanics, Building Maintenance, other certificate programs, associate degrees and various transfer programs. Thus, each CalWORKs student who chooses our campus is able to access a variety of programs and services to encourage and assist them in securing skills, training, employment and self-sufficiency.
The CalWORKs program provides Counseling, Academic Advising, Job Placement Services and Work Study to those eligible participants in the CalWORKs Program. The center is staffed by both FCC and E&TA personnel. Some of the benefits may include financial assistance, childcare, transportation, ancillary funds, enrollment fees, student book accounts and supplies.
If you are interested in the CalWORKs program or want to inquire about eligibility for CalWORKs benefits, telephone the CalWORKs Office at 442-8286.
