EXTENDED LEARNING CENTER (ELC)

We strive to help students attain success in their classes by helping them to improve their writing and reading skills through the assignments they encounter as a student.

TUTORS

The tutors are upper-division and graduate students who are trained and have experience helping students with all the phases of the writing process and with strategies that will help them to better comprehend reading assignments.

KIND OF HELP

There is no need to struggle alone because we are here to help with the following:

  • understanding an assignment brainstorming thesis statement getting started reading strategies writing revising editing citing sources
  • and much, much more

MATH LAB

The ELC math Lab is designed to aid students in developing the requisite analytical abilities, mathematical skills and test taking skills needed to perform successfully in college mathematics courses.

The ELC Math Lab offers the following services free of charge to students currently enrolled in a math class offered by the State Center community College District:

  • One-on-one tutorial assistance is available on a drop-in basis during all hours the Math Lab is open. Students will find a combination of peer tutors and adjunct math instructors on duty to assist with math topics. Access to 3 Dell Laptop workstations during all hours the lab is open.
  • Access to ALEKS which is a web-based program designed to reinforce mathematical concepts.

COMPUTER ACCESS AND ASSISTANCE

Computers with Internet access are available when working with a tutor. The tutors are knowledgeable in using the World Wide Web and can help with the kind of research needed for many classes.

PREPARATION FOR WORKING WITH A TUTOR

To maximize the benefit of our service, come to the Extended Learning Center with a copy of the assignment and any notes or rough drafts. If help is needed with reading, be sure to bring the text.

DROP-IN

We help students on a first come, first served basis. If tutors are helping others and are not immediately available, use the wait time productively to work on your assignment.

WHO ARE ELIGIBLE TO USE THIS SERVICE?

This is a free service for all students. A student only needs a student identification number to be helped.

DISABLED STUDENTS

Don’t let the stairs be a barrier. Have the receptionist in the Tutorial Center call the Extended Learning Center and a tutor will be sent to meet you.

EXTENDED LEARNING CENTER WORKSHOPS

Need help with parts of speech? Summarizing? MLA format? Each semester the ELC offers free workshops in these and other areas. No tests, no grades, no stress – just help with skills you need to succeed in class.
