Gary Deeter

Gary. N. Deeter has served as Director of Bands at Fresno City College since 1981. His duties at the college include teaching Score Reading and Conducting, Percussion Ensemble, Marimba Quartet, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble. He also currently teaching conducting CSU Fresno.

After graduation from Roosevelt High School in Fresno, his musical career began by winning the John Philip Sousa Award and the California State Drum Major Championship.

Mr. Deeter’s teaching career started in 1969 at Bullard High School in Fresno. Under his direction the band won numerous Sweepstakes awards including, the Portland Rose Festival, British Columbia Hyack Festival, the World of Music Festival in Hawaii, and an invitation to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

Mr. Deeter is a graduate of Fresno City College (where he also received the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1985), CSU Fresno. He received his Masters Degree from the University of San Francisco. A former clarinetist with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and Fresno Opera Association, he also was principal conductor of the Fresno Junior Philharmonic Orchestra (1975-1986), the Conductor of the Kings County Symphony, and the Fresno City College Community Orchestra.

Mr. Deeter studied conducting with Dr. David Whitwell, Guy Taylor, Russell Howland, and Maestro Herbert Bloomstead of the San Francisco Symphony. He received the Outstanding Conductor award at the World of Music Festival in Hawaii.

He was the founder, conductor, and educational director, of the Lake Sequoia Symphonic Music Camp (1968-1988). His extensive work as music adjudicator and guest conductor has taken him throughout the western United States, Canada, and Europe. He conducted the Fresno Junior Philharmonic Orchestra on their 1st concert tour thru Germany, Austria, and France, with an award winning performance in Vienna.

Mr. Deeter’s Fresno City College Concert Band has been invited to represent the State of California in the 60th Anniversary of D-Day at Normandy, France on June 6, 2004.

A strong advocate of wind music, he has guest conducted the Fresno Wind Orchestra as well as Honor Bands and Honor Orchestra throughout the West Coast. Mr. Deeter has held the position of Musical Director of the Fresno Summer Theatre Festival, and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, CBDNA, CMEA, FMCMEA, MENC, and has served as State Treasurer and lecturer for state conferences with MACCC.
