CHEM 1A - GENERAL CHEMISTRY

PREREQUISITE: High school chemistry with laboratory component, or Chemistry 3A or equivalent, and Math 103 or equivalent.

Basic concepts; atoms, molecules, and ions; formulas and equations; gas laws; electronic structure of atoms; bonding; atomic orbital and molecular orbital theories; solutions; redox reactions; introduction to acids and bases; survey of radioactivity. (CAN CHEM 2), (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)

CHEM 1B - GENERAL CHEMISTRY AND QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS 
5 units, 3 lecture hours, 6 lab hours
PREREQUISITE: Chemistry 1A.
ADVISORY: Eligibility for English 125 and 126 or English 153 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Homogeneous, heterogeneous, and ionic equilibria; chemical thermodynamics and kinetics; oxidation-reduction and coordination, and nuclear chemistry; inorganic qualitative and quantitative analysis.  (CAN CHEM 4) (TCSU CHEM 120) (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)

CHEM 3A - INTRODUCTORY GENERAL CHEMISTRY
4 units, 3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours, (Replaces Chemistry 2A-2B)
PREREQUISITE: Math 101 or equivalent.
ADVISORY: Math 103 and eligibility for English 125 and 126 or English 153 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Composition of matter and physical and chemical changes; fundamental laws and principles; atomic and molecular structure; acid-based theory, redox, and equilibria; qualitative and quantitative theory and techniques. For non-science majors. (CHEM 3A + 3B = CAn SEQ B) (A, CSU-GE, UC, I).

CHEM 3B - INTRODUCTORY ORGANIC & BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY
3 units, 2 lecture hours, 3 lab hours, (Replaces Chemistry 3)
PREREQUISITE: Chemistry 3A.
ADVISORY: Eligibility for English 125 and 126 or English 153 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Introduction to the basic concepts of organic and biochemistry. Structure and behavior of organic and biological compounds, metabolism, and regulation. Primarily for students in the health-oriented professions. Not a substitute for Chemistry 3A. (CHEM 3A+3B = CAN CHEM SEQ B) (A, CSU-GE)

CHEM 8A - ELEMENTARY ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
3 units, 3 lecture hours
PREREQUISITE: Chemistry 1A or 3A.
ADVISORY: Eligibility for English 125 and 126 or English 153 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Properties and reactions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds, theories of structure, and reaction mechanisms. For biology majors and students in prehealth sciences, environmental sciences, and programs that do not require a full-year sequence in organic chemistry. Recommended for students requiring a one-semester organic chemistry course. (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)

CHEM 28A - ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
3 units, 3 lecture hours
PREREQUISITE: Chemistry 1B.
COREQUISITE: Chemistry 29A.
ADVISORY: Eligibility for English 125 and 126 or English 153 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Structure, properties, and reactions of the major functional groups. Synthesis, separation, and identification of representative compounds. Infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass, and ultraviolet spectroscopies. First semester of a year course for chemistry majors. Recommended for premedical and other science majors.
