The Fresno City College SYMBAA Program, with an emphasis on the African American male experience, assists students in achieving success through a coordinated program of courses and student support.

The SYMBAA Program, a part of the Counseling Department at Fresno City College, includes a learning community designed to help African American Males graduate and/or transfer to a university.The learning community focuses on helping students improve in their study skills, and basic skills in reading and writing.

Learning Community Courses:

Fall Semester

·         African American Studies 1 (African American Culture)

·         English 262 (Reading Improvement)

·         English 252 (Writing Improvement)

·         Counseling 53 (College and Life Management)

Spring Semester

·         African American Studies 3 (African American Art)

·         English 126 (Reading Skills for College)

·         English 125 (Writing Skills for College)

·         Counseling 48 (Career Planning and Development)

·         Appropriate Math course


·      Have an academic goal of graduating and/or transferring to a university

·      Complete steps 1 through 4 in the New Student Checklist,

current FCC students have already completed these steps

·      Place into English 262 and English 252

(If you place into English 125/126 please refer to the Idile Program)

·      Complete the SYMBAA Application(available Spring)

Note: Applications will be reviewed during the Spring semester. Students invited to join the program will be notified via email. Students will be officially enrolled in the program during the first two weeks of the Fall semester.
