Chapter 30 – Active Duty
The most popular G.I. educational benefit category is for those veterans who have served on active duty. There are four eligibility categories.
Category I is the largest. It includes veterans who began active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985 and who were active for a minimum of three years of obligated service. This category includes veterans who served two years active duty and four years in the Selected Reserve.
Category II is comprised of military retirees who entered the service before January, 1977 and who were eligible to receive Chapter 34 benefits (Vietnam era).
Category III includes veterans who were voluntarily or involuntarily separated from the service because of a reduction in personnel.
Category IV encompasses veterans who were able to convert their education benefit from Chapter 32 to Chapter 30.
