Scholarships Information 

There are several veterans Scholarships available here at Fresno City College.

Ben Staton Memorial Scholarship
One $500 scholarship will be awarded ($250 each semester) to a student who is a child of a disabled or deceased veterans of any branch of the armed forces. The student must be enrolled in at least nine (9) units and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.


Clyde McCully Scholarship 

One $1000 scholarship will be awarded ($500 each semester) to a Fresno City College student who is a veteran of any branch of the service. A copy of the applicants proof of veterans status (DD214) must be submitted to the Fresno City College Veterans Office to be considered for this award. The nature of service and quality of discharge will be a basis for selection. Academic transcripts will also be reviewed by the scholarship review committee. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and must be maintained to remain eligible for the second semester.

This scholarship was established by the family of Clyde McCully to honor his life and recognize over 19 years of service as President of Fresno City College. He is a veteran of WWII and as a member of the US Coast Guard served with naval amphibious assault forces in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. Dr. McCully completed his degree work at USC and UCLA. His wife, Betty Jo, is also a retired teacher. They have four children, all of whom attended and graduated from Fresno City College Dr. McCully has served as a consultant to educational institutions and agencies in the U.S, Europe and Asia. He has been a leader in the community, serving as members of Valley Children’s Hospital Board of Trustees, North Fresno Rotary Club, Bank of America Scholarship Committee and past Vice President of the State Center Community College Foundation. He enjoys visiting with other retired Fresno City College staff members, traveling with his wife and best friend, Betty Jo, sailing, sea lore and continues to support the State Center Community College Foundation.


Scholarships will be awarded based upon funds available to full-time students with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5. Veterans, who are majoring in Liberal Arts, Math or Sciences and anticipating or pursuing a career in teaching or the field of education, are encouraged to apply.

This scholarship was established by the family of Frederick E. Jaso to honor his love of learning, especially in the areas of Math and Science. Frederick had a special way with people and had a gift for helping everyone feel a sense of belonging and self-worth. He is most known for his incredible patience when it came to teaching others. His gift for understanding people helped others feel that they had contributions to make, whether it was telling a story, lending a book or just listening. He was an entrepreneur who did many things and nothing was impossible to learn. Frederick earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Fresno City College and encouraged others to continue their education. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War (conflict) and earned numerous medals among them the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Additional consideration will be given to graduates of Caruthers, Riverdale or Washington Union High School. An essay on the topic, “Who and how was I inspired to teach?” is required.

Lawerence McAlaster, Sr. Scholarship

A $250 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a former or current member of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Merchant Marines, National Guard or Navy. Preference will be given to disabled individuals and/or people who have demonstrated campus or community involvement. Recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units and maintain a 2.5 GPA.. This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Lawerence McAlaster, Sr., a founding member of the Veterans Club of Fresno City College, who passed away in April 2010. Larry served with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam and Okinawa, and received the Good Conduct Medal of Honor and the National Defense Service Medal. He enrolled at Fresno City College at the age of 55 and earned numerous Certificates of Completion as he pursued his degrees in Sociology and Social Work. Larry could always be found talking to someone on campus. He had a way of lifting people’s spirits. No matter how bad your day was, you always felt better when you talked with Larry. He is forever loved and remembered for his gentle spirit, engaging smile, wisdom and wit.


Lee Stoner Memorial Veterans Scholarship

Scholarships will be awarded to Fresno City College students who are veterans from any branch of the service. Lee was a Korean War submarine veteran, and a member of the United States Submarine Veterans. Mr. Stoner began working at Fresno City College in 1981 as the Apprenticeship Training Coordinator in the Applied Technology Division and retired in 1999. He helped organize the effort to build the Veterans Peace Memorial and continued to help plan the Veterans Ceremony each November on campus. He remained active on the Veterans Committee since retirement and passed away August 10, 2011.
