The Chicano-Mexican American community, culture, and heritage in American society. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the focus is on society and culture; social and cultural change; social and cultural conflict. Roots of Chicano-Mexicano culture and heritage from the pre-Columbian Indian civilizations to the present. (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)

CLS 12 - CHICANO HISTORY

A survey of Chicano history from the early colonization and settlement of northern New Spain (now the American Southwest) to the 1980s. (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)

History and origin of Mexican dance. Mexican songs and folktales and how they are interpreted through Mexican dance. Dances practiced and performed at the beginning level. (A, CSU-GE, UC)

CLS 18 - LATIN JAZZ

Prerequisite: Ability to play suitable instrument. Previous band, jazz band or orchestra experience. Good reading ability and improvisational skills desirable. Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

A historical and musical perspective on the style of Latin jazz, salsa, and Afro-Cuban music. Terminology and performance on the musical instruments indigenous to Latin jazz or salsa. African-Cuban music and its relationship to jazz composition. (A, CSU, UC)

Reading and critical analysis of literary works of Chicano cultural values and themes as expressed in essays, novels, poetry, and plays. (A, CSU-GE, UC)

A historical survey of the art of Mesoamerican and Andean ancient cultures. The art and architecture of the Olmec, Mayan, Toltec, Aztec, Moche, Nazca, Inca, and other ancient civilizations of the new World. (A, CSU, UC)

A sociological analysis of the Mexican American female in contemporary society. Special emphasis will be placed on her role in the family, in the church, in school, at work, and in politics. (A, CSU, UC)
