Want to be a Tutor?

Thank you for your interest in being a peer tutor at the Fresno City College Tutorial Center. Minimum employment requirements:

  • Be a full time student (12 units) at an institution of higher education 
  • Received an A or B in the course(s) you wish to tutor 
  • Submit a tutor application which includes a current class schedule, unofficial transcripts, and two faculty recommendations

Please complete the Application Packet and turn it in at the Tutorial Center (Li-134). Once your application is submitted, the Tutorial Coordinator will contact you. If hired, all tutors must enroll in LA 1, Tutoring Training, a 1 unit course. See the Schedule of Courses for more information on LA 1.


Job Description

Paid tutors earn $8 an hour and assist students with course assignments by reviewing and clarifying class material. Additional assignments may include student recruitment and classroom visits. Specific duties:

  • Promote active learning in tutoring sessions 
  • Facilitate learning through the use of effective communication skills 
  • Integrate how to learn with what to learn 
  • Provide study skills (i.e., time management, note-taking, textbook reading, test-taking) assistance when appropriate 
  • Develop a professional and encouraging relationship with students 
  • Help students develop confidence and a positive attitude 
  • Guide student participation and evaluate student performance while providing appropriate feedback and encouragement 
  • Work collaboratively with other tutors 
  • Maintain confidentiality 
  • Participate in on-going tutor training opportunities and attend scheduled tutor meetings 
  • Provide a student perspective on successful learning and remember the differences between instructors and tutors 
  • Abide by the National Tutoring Association Code of Ethics and the FCC Tutorial Center rules and guidelines 
  • Submit schedules and sign pay sheets on time  
  • Model effective learning and study skills strategies
