COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) is an extensive, advanced officer drug impairment training course leading to a State Certification through the California Highway Patrol and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Credentialing. The DRE is an effective means of identifying and prosecuting drug impaired individuals and has become the accepted standard throughout the United States primarily due to the accuracy and effectiveness of the evaluator.
CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION:
The Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) school review, DRE pre-school, and DRE School have been combined into an intensive and comprehensive nine day course designed to impart to the student the knowledge and skills of the DRE protocol. These 72 hours of classroom training include but are not limited to the following subjects: Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, Twelve Step Evaluation, Seven Categories of Drugs, Physiology of Drugs, Examination of Vital Signs and Eyes, Resume Preparation, Report Writing, Classifying a Suspect, Alcohol as a Drug, Drug Combinations, Case Preparation and Testimony,Define Drug as DRE.
FIELD CERTIFICATION:
Within 6 months of classroom course completion students will be scheduled to attend field certification at a site close to their home agency. This phase of training will include 4 days of hands on training in actual enforcement situations. i.e., examining persons under arrest for drug impairment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This course is an advanced drug influence training course for law enforcement officers, which complies with the national standards established by the IACP. Students are required to have previous training in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.
APPLICATION:
The classroom portion of the DRE program is certified by the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) under Plan IV, and many agencies may apply to POST for reimbursement. Additional funding may be available through local agency traffic safety grants from the Office of Traffic safety.
