· Library Technology 51 Introduction to Library Services
· Library Technology 52 Library Technical Services
· Library Technology 54 Literature and Services for Youth

B. How do the courses support specific program objectives?

Courses support the Library Technology Program by providing the necessary and relevant exposure required to produce entry-level library paraprofessionals. Students learn the basics of library principles and practices in Library Technology 51, then proceed to basic technical and public service practices in Library Technology 52 and 55. Library Technology 54, 56, and 57 address more specific job skills in use by paraprofessionals in a variety of libraries.

C. How do courses articulate with or complement each other?

Program courses are designed to build upon each other. The information pyramid starts with Library Technology 51, the introductory course and then proceeds to the basic Technical and Public Services classes, 52 and 55. The other three courses may be taken in any order.

D. How do the transfer and articulation agreements serve the needs of the students?

Those students pursuing an Associate of Science degree will take the general education requirements that articulate with the University of California and California State University system requirements. The certificate program is a terminal certificate intended to lead to advancement in the profession.

E. How does the program ensure that current curriculum is adequately meeting the needs of students?

Classes are taught by adjunct instructors who have full-time positions in area libraries. They are instructors who are working in the field and are aware of the day-to-day operation of libraries and what skills are expected of paraprofessionals. The curriculum was recently adjusted to reflect the needs of the library community in the area.

F. How does the program relate to other programs and units within the college?

Students enrolled in the program have frequent contact with other college departments. The nature of the course content requires significant library research, use of the computer lab, and other support services. If students are pursuing an Associate of Science degree, they are required to complete the college's general education requirements before the degree is conferred. The Library Technology courses are taught and administered by the Learning Resources Center staff while being technically under the Applied Technology Division.

G. What is being done to make students aware of cultural diversity?

Students of the program who are working in libraries already are in direct contact with library patrons from culturally diverse backgrounds. Those students who are not will be exposed to this diversity through subject-specific course content, particularly in Library Technology 55, 54, and 57.

H. How does the program address the needs of special populations?

Special populations have access to the college's High-Tech Center as well as the translators and other services available to the college population as a whole. As far as course content, special populations are at the core of libraries. Many students of the program come to the college from these populations and interact with these populations. The program's course content is sensitive to this fact and designed with them in mind.
