Old Administration Building

Fresno City College will host over 400 high school students from Fresno, Madera, Tulare and Kings counties for the college’s second annual Journalism Day Conference that begins at 9 a.m. on March 9 in the Old Administration Building.

The day-long conference will feature workshops in different facets of journalism, including news writing, Media Stereotyping, Blogging, Broadcasting, Photography, Sports News, Sports Reporting, Public Relations, Podcasting for Radio & Beyond, Social media and Multimedia/Multiplatform Reporting, Radio, Researching a Story—Finding the Facts, Foreign Language Media and a Panel Presentation on fake news.

The conference will also feature some unusual workshops such as When a Reporter Becomes the News by Mackenzie Mays of the Fresno Bee; Becoming a College Journalist by former editors of the Rampage; a Broadcast Truck Experience, Discover CMAC, Your Community Media Center; Newsroom Tour of the Rampage; and a workshop for instructors of journalism.

All the workshops will be led by practicing journalists and journalism educators.

The event starts at 9 a.m. in the Old Administration Building Auditorium with a general welcome and a keynote presentation featuring a panel on Careers in Journalism with Joe Wirt, administrator of the California Press Foundation; Michael Carr, news director at ABC30; Gordon Webster, publisher of the Fresno Business Journal; Lisa Boyles, communications specialist at CSU Fresno; and Mike Osegueda, Yahoo Sports.

The idea of the conference originated from the California Newspaper Publishers Association and the FCC Journalism Advisory Board.

“The primary purpose is to refocus students on the importance of journalistic writing and media literacy as well as giving them a rare chance to meet with professional journalists and college professors,” states Dr. Dympna Ugwu-Oju, journalism instructor at FCC. “It is the hope of the conference organizers that many of the participants choose to major in journalism in college and attend FCC.”
