Advanced Technical Courses
The Advanced Technical Courses
are designed for in-service personnel already employed by a public
safety agency. The following is a brief description of our current
offerings:
Background Investigator: Designed to provide the background
investigator with the knowledge of their role in the selection
process, the legal aspects, interviewing, sources of information
and preparing the investigation report. 32 hours, Post Plan IV/STC
Cert.
Bomb/Explosive Recognition
& Response: Designed
to familiarize the student with a basic knowledge of explosives
including military, civilian, improvised and booby traps. Searching
techniques, blast mitigation, evacuation procedures and post
blast investigation will be covered. 40 hours, POST Plan IV.
Communications Training
Ofc. Up-date: Designed
to up-date CTOs in current liability issues, training techniques,
critical thinking skills, and improving the CTO's training program,
24 hours. POST Plan IV.
Drug Influence, Clandestine
Labs, H & S 11550:
Designed to train students to recognize, arrest and properly
testify against persons under the influence of Alcohol, Cocaine,
Depressants, Hallucinogens, Marijuana, Opiates, Phencyclidine
and Stimulants. Students are instructed in substance identification,
physiological symptoms, objective signs, chemical testing, and
legal issues. 32 hours, POST Plan IV/STC Cert.
Drug Influence In A Custodial
Setting: The focus
of this 16-hour course is to provide those assigned to a custody
setting with a basic introduction to controlled substances and
how they affect the human body both psychologically and physiologically.
This course will train students how to recognize persons under
the influence of alcohol, cocaine, depressants, hallucinogens,
marijuana, opiates, phencyclidine and stimulants. Basic report
writing elements for Strip Search Authorization forms will also
be included. This is an STC certified course.
Dispatcher Update: This course will address dispatcher
liability in the workplace, gang awareness, CLETS/DMV update
information and introduces new hot topics such as elder abuse
and community oriented policing for dispatchers. 24 hours, POST
Plan IV.
Ethical Dilemmas In Public
Safety Agencies: Designed
to encourage self-examination and acceptance of responsibility,
enhance awareness of personal values, discuss standards, encourage
planning for future decision making, and highlight common feelings
about right and wrong. 8 hours, POST Plan IV/STC Cert.
Expandable Straight Baton
Instructor: This course
provides the student with the techniques and skills to teach
Expandable and Straight Baton's basic and advanced courses. Teaching
principles will be demonstrated regarding, course management,
teaching aids, testing and certification procedures. 16 hours,
POST Plan II.
Explosive Identification
for First Responders:
This course is for the School Resource Officer, Field Probation
Officer, Juvenile Hall and Correctional staff. This focus of
this course is explosive identification for the first responder.
Topics include types of explosives and explosive devices, effects
and types of explosions, how to handle bomb threats and suspicious
packages. Students will observe an explosive demonstration and
participate in practical exercises where they will utilize searching
techniques to search and locate explosives. 16 Hours, STC Cert.
Field Tactics for CDC/ISU: This course focuses on field tactics
for the California Department of Corrections/Investigative Services
Unit member, areas covered will include: pedestrian approach,
field interrogation, vehicle approaches, radio procedures, residence
& building searches, advanced handgun, tactical use of the
shotgun, mental & physical readiness, edged weapons, and
gun retention. 40 hours, STC Cert.
Field Tactics for Probation
Officers: This course
focuses on field tactics for the Field Probation Officer, areas
covered will include: pedestrian approach, field interrogation,
vehicle approaches, radio procedures, residence & building
searches, advanced handgun, introduction to the shotgun, mental
& physical readiness, edged weapons, and gun retention. 40
hours, STC Cert.
Field Tactics II For Probation
Officers: The focus
of this 24-hour course is to provide a probation officer with
an overview of radio procedure, use of force, explosive identification
and low speed defensive driving. The students will be provided
with lecture on explosive recognition and observe an explosives
demonstration and will participate in a low speed defensive driving
course comprised of driving obstacles and maneuvers that probation
officers may encounter during their tour of duty.
Field Training Officer: Designed for officers who supervise
and train recruit officers or who anticipate an assignment as
an FTO. The course follows the San Jose model. 40 hours, POST
Plan II.
Interview & Interrogation,
Patrol: This is designed
to assist the patrol/probation officer in investigation of crimes
that have witnesses and/or suspects and preparing the best possible
reports to prosecute the case. The course is based on behavioral
analysis and includes definitions, preparation factors, observation
skills, application of techniques, legal aspects, lineups and
showups, and trial problems. 16 hours, POST Plan II/STC Cert.
Interview & Interrogation,
Advanced: This course
is designed for officers who have been or are about to be assigned
to an investigative position and is not intended for patrol officers.
This class will improve the student's skills in interviewing,
interrogation and the gathering of testimonial evidence from
victims, witnesses and suspects. 16 hours, POST Plan II/STC Cert.
Officer Safety/Field Tactics
for Law Enforcement: Designed
to cover new and accepted officer safety and survival techniques.
Topics include routine and high risk traffic stops, multi agency
pursuits, edged weapons, control techniques, gun retention, tactical
shotgun and expandable straight baton. 32 hours, POST Plan II.
Officer Safety for Plain
Clothes: Designed to
address the safety concerns of personnel assigned in a plainclothes
capacity. Topics include: concealed handgun use, surviving violent
confrontations, arrest and control, searching, survival shooting
and ground grappling. 32 hours, POST Cert. Plan II (Back-fill
approval)
Presentation Skills: This class will provide students with
a basic understanding of presentation skills and techniques that
can be applied in any presentation environment. Provides an overview
of learning activities, facilitation of group activities, public
speaking and resources available to enhance presentations. 24
hours, POST Plan IV/STC Cert.
RangeMaster/Firearms Instructor: Designed to prepare the student with
the fundamentals of teaching law enforcement firearms techniques
to others and to create and administer a safe and quality Firearms
Training Program. Pre-qualification test prior to starting the
class. 40 hours, POST Plan IV.
Sexual Assault Investigation: Designed for law enforcement officers
assigned to Sexual Assault Investigation cases. Areas covered
from preliminary stages through preparation and persecution,
e.g., Investigation Techniques, Court Preparation, Physical Evidence
Handling, Victim/Witness Issues, Interview & Interrogation,
Megan's Law, Criminal Sexual Predators and the Internet. Meets
PC 13516 requirement. 40 hours, POST Plan II.
Supervisory Course (POST): Designed for newly promoted law
enforcement supervisor. Topical areas covered: role identification,
leadership styles, values, ethics and principles, assertive
leadership, administrative support, employee performance
appraisal, employee relations, liability issues, discipline,
counseling, planning and organization, stress, and transition.
80 hours, POST Plan IV.
Supervisory Course (STC): Designed for newly promoted probation
supervisors. Topical areas covered: role identification,
leadership styles, values, ethics and principles, assertive
leadership, administrative support, employee performance
appraisal, employee relations, liability issues, discipline,
counseling, planning and organization, stress, and transition.
80 hours, STC Cert.
Tactical Communication: Designed to familiarize the student
with good communication skills and the art of successful
verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Areas covered
include pertinent terminology, identifying reasons to use
tactical communications, importance of listening skills,
citizen expectations and complaints, spatial relationships
and body language, handling verbal abuse, and the art of
persuasion. 16 hours, POST Plan II/STC Cert.
Tactical Handgun for Law
Enforcement: This intense
course is designed to supplement the line officer's handgun training
with advanced gunfighting techniques. Topics include a refinement
of presentation and marksmanship fundamentals, continuity of
fire, shooting while disabled, weapon retention, shooting on
the move, ground fighting, and other survival enhancement skills.
24 hours, POST Plan I.
Tactical Shotgun Instructor: This course provides the student
with the necessary skills to train others in modern techniques
of the tactical shotgun. Topics include types and actions,
pattern zeroing, marksmanship, ammunition management, training
drills, and a proven gun handling methodology. 32 hours,
POST Plan III.
Traffic Accident Investigation: Designed to satisfy the requirements
of CVC 40600a. 40 hours, POST Plan IV.
Traffic Accident Investigation
- Intermediate
This 40-hour course
is designed for the experienced accident investigator, who has
completed the basic traffic accident investigation course. This
course will improve the officer's capabilities of investigating
traffic collisions. Includes: drag factor, basic speed analysis,
centrifugal speed analysis, combined speed analysis, and skid
skid analysis. POST Plan IV.
