Organization
The Social Sciences provide
an appreciation of the diversity and commonality of all human
experience. The curriculum studies human behavior, both past
and present, individual and collective, legal and illegal, distant
and local. It seeks to foster greater social justice, personal
freedom, and mutual understanding.
Courses in many subjects are
offered. Among these are African-American Studies, American-Indian
Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Asian-American Studies, Chicano-Latino
Studies, Child Development, Criminology, Economics, Education,
Fashion Merchandising, Food and Nutrition, Cultural and Regional
Geography, History, Home Economics, Human Services, Political
Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's Studies. Most courses
can be used to satisfy transfer and associate degree general
education requirements.
Career Training
Students may select a training
program leading to a certificate of completion, a certificate
of achievement or an associate in science degree. Certificate
programs require occupational courses only and vary between 6
and 40 units of course work. The associate of science degree
mandates a minimum of 60 units, consisting of the major, electives,
and required courses in general education.
The Social Sciences Division
offers career training in the following areas: archaeology, child
development, criminology (including police and law enforcement,
correctional science, and pre-academy training), education and
instructional aide, food services (including dietary aide, dietetic
service supervisor, food service management, and nutrition science),
home economics and consumer education, and human services (including
social work, alcoholism counseling, developmental disabilities
specialist).
