The faculty in the social sciences provide instruction leading to degrees and/or certificates in three majors within the field of human services.

Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counseling - Major #7951

This program is designed for students interested in working in the field of chemical dependency. Completion of the total program will broaden a student's understanding and assist in preparation needed to enter the field of alcoholism and drug abuse counseling.

This program is recognized by the California Association for Alcohol/Drug Educators (CADE).

A Certificate of Completion in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counseling is awarded in recognition that a student has completed the following two entry-level courses in the field of Substance Abuse Counseling.

Developmental Disabilities Specialist - Major #797

This program furnishes career training to persons interested in providing direct services to the developmentally disabled. It covers five major areas: residential services, employment, social activities, transportation, and education. The courses are taught in cooperation with the Central Valley Regional Center for the Developmentally Disabled.

Details of the course work required for the major may be obtained from the Social Science Division office or the CVRCDD.

Social Work Option - Major #761

This major furnishes training to persons interested in a career providing services to this less fortunate members of society. The Associate in Science Degree and Certificate of Achievement in Human Services, Social Work Option, requires twenty-nine and one-half units.

The institutional, ecological, demographic, sociological, and social-psychological aspects of ethnicity and race, and the examination of other non-dominant groups in the United States. (A, CSU, UC)

5 SOCIOLOGY OF RAPE

3 units, 3 lecture hours, (See also Sociology 5 and Women's Studies 5)

Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

A micro and macro overview of rape including the history of rape, a study of what creates a rape culture, characteristics and pathology of rapists, psychology of the survivor, and current laws. The various forms of sexual assault, such as marital rape, male rape, and incest. (A, CSU)

7 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: ABUSE WITHIN THE FAMILY

3 unit, 3 lecture hour, (See also Sociology 7 and Women's Studies 7)

Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

A micro and macro study of the historical and contemporary problem of domestic violence. Includes an overview of battered spouse syndrome, characteristics of the survivor and the batterer, therapy approaches, and current legislation. Information on child abuse, incest, and elder abuse is presented. (A, CSU)

10 INTRODUCTION TO AGING STUDIES

3 units, 3 lecture hours, (See also Sociology 10)

An introduction to gerontology: theories, concepts, perspectives, and research in the study of aging: psychological and sociological changes; cultural, multicultural, and political issues. Intergenerational and multicultural activities. (A, CSU, UC)

18 ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING: PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL GROWTH

2 units, 2 lecture hours

Techniques to establish optimal performance and the well-being of the helping professional. (A, CSU)

19A OCCUPATIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE

1-4 units, (Repeats = 3)

Prerequisite: Human Services 20. Corequisite: Human Services 24 (may be taken prior to HS 19A). Must be enrolled in minimum of 7 units, including occupational work experience class, have a job directly related to the work experience class and either be majoring in the field or be enrolled in a course directly related to the job. Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Supervised employment from 5 to 20 hours per week, and one hour in class per week. The amount of college credit earned by the student is dependent upon the number of hours of work during the semester as follows:

  • One unit for minimum of 75 hours;
  • Two units for minimum of 150 hours;
  • Three units for minimum of 225 hours;
  • Four units for total of 300 hours. (A, CSU)

24 FUNDAMENTALS OF INTERVIEWING AND COUNSELING

Principles of interviewing and counseling, both theory and practice. Focus on specific skills within a human service setting. Analysis of the dynamics between counselor and client. (A, CSU)

25 ASSERTIVENESS TRAINING

How to become more effective and creative in expressing oneself in a courteous and dignified manner. Discovering the communication options available in various life situations. (A, CSU)

30 INTERVENTIONS IN SOCIAL WORK

Methods in social work intervention with individual, group, and community; problem analysis and available services. (A, CSU)

35 INTRODUCTION TO EATING DISORDERS

2 units, 2 lecture hours

Compulsive overeating, bulimia, and anorexia nervosa. Selected research findings related to weight regulation, psychological variables, dieting, obesity, cultural factors, family dynamics, and medical complications. (A, CSU)

38 COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH: POLICY AND SERVICES

3 units, 3 lecture hours

Corequisite: Human Services 20. Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Community service prevention and treatment programs for mental health and illness. (Scheduled infrequently) (A, CSU)

40 ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING: LAW AND ETHICS, PREVENTION, EDUCATION, OUTREACH AND REFERRAL

Classification of drugs, legal solutions, restrictions, community prevention, outreach, screening techniques, intervention and referral, and crisis counseling. Not open to students with credit in Human Services/Sociology 41. (A, CSU)

The history of alcohol and other mood changing drugs in the U.S.; myths and stereotypes of alcohol use; socio-cultural factors that contribute to the use of drugs; patterns and progression of alcoholism; and the dynamics of treatment. (A, CSU)

43 ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING: CASE MANAGEMENT

3 units 3 lecture hours

Prerequisite: Human Services 42. Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Elementary techniques in the treatment of alcohol dependency for the individual and the family; student participation in counseling techniques in a group study experience. Bookkeeping, referral, consultation, and follow-up skills. (A, CSU)

44 PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS

3 units, 3 lecture hours

The physical and psychological aspects of drug use, including abuse and addiction, physical and psychological dependencies, physiological effects of commonly used drugs, and treatment and prevention. Not open to students with credit in Human Services 45. (A, CSU)

61 INTRODUCTION TO FOSTER PARENTING

1 unit, 1 lecture hour, (Repeats = 3), (See also Child Development 61)

The process of foster home licensing. Parenting skills specific to the needs of foster children. Agency resources and rights of foster parent, biological parent and foster child. Not applicable to the AS degree.

62 INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS

1 unit, 1 lecture hour, (See also Child Development 62)

Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Child development, parent-child communication, choices and consequences and skill acquisition necessary for successful independent living by teens preparing to leave foster care and the foster parents who care for adolescents. Designed primarily for the person interested in becoming a foster parent.

65 INTRODUCTION TO DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

3 units, 3 lecture hours

An introduction to all aspects of developmental disabilities. The definition of developmental disabilities; the history and trends; major publicly and privately funded service organizations; the major service needs of persons with developmental disabilities; and advocacy on behalf of the developmentally disabled. 66 RESIDENTIAL CARE AND BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT

1 unit, 1 lecture hour

Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

Behavior analysis and residential care. What constitutes appropriate antecedents, and how to teach a new behavior through shaping and task analysis. (A)

67 DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

3 units, 3 lecture hours

Prerequisite: Human Services 65. Advisory: Eligibility for English 25 and 26 or English 53 or ESL 67 and 68 recommended.

An advanced course for students interested in specializing in direct care services for persons with developmental disabilities to include Care Homes and Adult Service Programs. Also, a review of Developmental Services, plus a discussion of Residential and Adult Service Programs including licensing, employment, recreation, transportation, education, and sexuality issues of the developmentally disabled. (A)
