The Weekend College program at Fresno City College allows for the completion of a Liberal Arts degree in 24 months completely on weekends! This program has been designed specifically for working adults who always wanted a college degree but their work schedules have not permitted the completion of a college degree during the day or traditional evening classes. The Weekend College program provides an educational opportunity to members of the community who are unable or find it inconvenient to attend school during the day or weekday, evening hours, work days, are on-call evenings, work out of town during the week, or work split shifts. The motivated student will be able to complete this program of study in 24 months.

What is a Liberal Arts Degree

The Liberal Arts program fulfills the Associate of Arts degree requirements and it is also a transfer program to the California State University system. It fulfills the lower division general education requirements. The program provides a broad base of educational experiences about aspects of the world which a major area of study may not include. The Liberal Arts degree is the most broad-based of general education degree programs. A student will have made noteworthy progress towards becoming totally educated and prepared for a lifetime of learning.

Class Meeting Times
Friday 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and
             1:00 p.m. -  5:00 p.m.
Sunday 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Holidays will be observed and additional breaks are scheduled in the program calendar.

How the Program Works

A cohort of eligible students will be formed at the beginning of the sequence of courses each January. The cohort will progress through each course together forming a community of mature learners.

Students register for their classes three times a year - fall, spring, and summer. Assistance with registration is provided to students in the program. The registration fee for classes is the same as it is for all other classes at Fresno City College.

Students may drop a course without being dropped from the program. If a student has already taken a course or met the general education requirement for an area, the student is not required to repeat the course. This often provides students with some college units a break in their scheduling.

Program Eligibility

In order to join this unique program, students must be eligible for English 125 and Math 101. If the student does not meet the reading level for English 1A, appropriate courses must be taken prior to entering the program. Students must take the English and Math placement tests as soon as possible to determine their eligibility.

All students must apply for both admission to Fresno City College and the Weekend College Program. Acceptance into the Program is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Establishing Eligibility for English 125

An applicant for the Weekend College Program must provide evidence of eligibility for English 125. Any on of the following ways may be used to establish this eligibility.

  1. Score of 38-54 or higher on the multiple choice English Placement Test used by Fresno City College and Reedley College. A copy of the students notification regarding your scores needs to be provided to the program. At the completion of your test a printout of your scores are given.

  2. Achieve a grade of credit in Fresno City College’s English 252W and 126R. Or equivalent course at Reedley College.

Fresno City College determines placement levels from a variety of criteria: if you do not meet any of the above criteria but still believe you could succeed in an English 125 class you may see the Weekend College Program Director (559) 442-8222 or  Weekend College Counselor Thom Gaxiola (559) 442-8226.

Establishing Eligibility for Math 101

  1. Pass the Basic Math multiple choice Placement Test with a 30/35 and the Pre-Algebra Placement Test with a 23/35 used by Fresno City College and Reedley College. A copy of the student’s notification regarding your scores needs to be provided to the program. At the completion of your test a printout of your scores are given.

  2. Achieve a grade of credit in Fresno City College’s Math 260 series.

  3. The Weekend College Program recommends that all potential students review the basic math skills of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratio, proportion and measurement before taking the placement test. Good mathematics review books can be found at the Fresno City College’s bookstore and in the local library system.
