I know we have been in the news a few times this week and I thought we should end this week on a high note.
Today, the Fresno women’s organization, the Progressive Home Club, donated $155,000 to the SCCC Foundation for Fresno City College students! But wait…it gets better! The SCCC Foundation matched their generous gift with another $155,000 for a grand total of a $310,000 endowment connected to the Central Valley Promise for Fresno City College students. THIS is a great start to our Central Valley Promise campaign.
Congratulations on a job well done goes to Rico Guerrero, Executive Director of the SCCC Foundation and the entire Foundation staff. Also, special thanks to the Student Activities staff that include Ernie Martinez, Maile Martin, Virginia Her along with students, Liz Flores and (Deron Walker) Sam the Ram.
In talking with the members of the Progressive Home Club, it was apparent that they believe in the power of education to transform lives…and they believe in YOU.
Before the check presentation, it was an honor and a privilege to join many practicing social justice leaders and talented children at the Garlanding Ceremony paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. I was proud to represent Fresno City College at Courthouse Park in downtown Fresno at the annual ceremony for Dr. King. I was very pleased to see present a few Fresno City College faces in the crowd. Thanks to those of you who joined me in remembering this great American.
As we get ready to go on this three-day weekend, I believe it’s really important to remember what this weekend is all about. Dr. Martin Luther King had a vision. It’s a vision that each and every one of you put into action every day. I commend your good work and your dedication to our students.
Dr. King once said that “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”
Please also see the attached College Report for January that includes a variety of good news to share. Enjoy your holiday weekend. Rest up because we have a lot to do together this semester!
