The Measles virus (also called Rubeola) is a highly contagious illness.

  • High Fever (103-105F)
  • Cough
  • Runny Nose
  • Sore Throat
  • Watery and Red Eyes
  • Rash that starts on the face

  • Measles is easily spread from person to person through the air by infectious droplets and can survive in the air for up to 2 hours after an infectious person leaves a room.
  • Measles can take anywhere from 7-21 days to develop symptoms. Average time is 14 days.
  • In an in-vaccinated household, a person will spread measles to 90% of household members.
  • People are infectious 4 days prior to onset of rash and 4 days after rash appears. The rash starts on the face and moves downward.

  • Check your vaccination status and discuss vaccinations with your primary care provider.
  • Anyone who has had the measles before is immune.
  • Adults born in or after 1957 should be given 2 MMR doses separated by at least 28 days.
  • Preschool and school-age children (12 months or older) should be given 2 MMR doses. Typically, the first dose is given at 12-15 months. the second is given at 3 to 5 years of age.
  • In young children, 6 months through 11 months, an MMR can be given. This dose of MMR DOES NOT COUNT towards the usual required two doses for MMR. The child will still need those two doses, the first usually given at 12 months and the second dose between 3 to 5 years of age.

  • Call your primary health care provider. Do not go to see the doctor without calling ahead of time. Follow the instructions given by the doctor's office.
  • If the doctor's office tells you to come in, travel by personal car. Do not use public transportation.
