Tim Miller Brings His Message of Activism Through Art to Fresno City College

Sep 27, 2023

Renowned performance artist Tim Miller will bring his message of activism through art to Fresno City College the week of October 9.  Miller will present a solo performance on Friday, October 13, A Body in the O.   Throughout the week he will work with students to create a production based on their own life stories and experiences for Body Maps on Saturday, October 14.

“This is something of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with such a renowned artist and also a chance for students to learn how they can create performance opportunities for themselves,” said FCC Theatre Arts instructor Karina Balfour

Tickets for each performance are $25 for General and $10 for Students.  Each event is a fundraiser.

Tim Miller is known for his artistic activism with most of his work being solo performances.  He finds issues that he thinks are important and creates pieces to highlight those issues to get the word out into the community emphasizing LGBTQ+ issues, social issues, and political issues. Since 1999, he has focused his creative and political work on marriage equality and addressing the injustices facing lesbian and gay couples in America.

“A lot of his work has led to social change and I think this is a great opportunity for the students to learn how they can do that for themselves, create performance opportunities for themselves, focus on the issues that are important to them from their own lives and how to use art to make change,” added Balfour.

A Body in the O

Miller will perform a new work created from his brand new book of performances and stories, A BODY IN THE O on October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the FCC Theatre.  A book signing follows. Proceeds from this event support Theatre Arts students attending the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Sponsorship opportunities are also available Tickets can be purchased online.

A Body in the O was inspired by a day when Miller scrambled up inside the O of the Hollywood sign and imagined the performance space tree house of his dreams, A Body in the O journeys through the hoops of the Department of Homeland Security, a queer boy's truth-telling, the human heart's mysterious Os and finally a wedding day as Miller imagines the full possibility of performance that changes the world inside these wooden Os!

Body Maps

Body Maps is an original performance created from the stories of the performers themselves from their dreams, memories and desires as they map that charged border between our bodies and society...our narratives and our politics...ourselves and others.  Body Maps will be performed in the FCC Theatre on Saturday, October 14, at 2 p.m.

Body Maps is a fundraiser for the FCC Rainbow Alliance Staff and Faculty Association for student scholarships Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite.
