Campus Update — Winter Break, 2016

Dec 1, 2016

Office of the President

This is my last message to you for the fall semester of 2016. During this past semester, Fresno City College has done a lot of good work and served our students well. I would like to thank each of you for the contribution you make to the success of our students.

By now, many of you have heard that the search for our next Vice President of Student Services was a failed one. The district Vice Chancellor of Human Resources and I have been in contact with a number of search firms who will help us locate an external candidate who will serve as interim until we hire our permanent Vice President of Student Services.

I want to thank the search committee for their time, effort and thoughtful deliberation. Their task was not an easy one, I appreciate their candid insight and greatly appreciate their dedication to our college.

I want to thank interim Vice President Roy Vasquez for the work that he has done since he was appointed. Under his leadership, Student Services continues to provide services to more than 20,000 students. He has been a strong supporter of the Ram Pantry, which continues to feed hundreds of students each Friday. During his tenure in Student Services, he has dealt with many disciplinary challenges and did so with a kind heart, always putting students first.

I would also like to thank Lydia Anderson, who has served as interim Dean of the Business Division during this time. Her thoughtful attention to detail, as well as her in-depth knowledge of our programs, has served our students well. As she has told many of you, she loves this college and our students. It is that love of students that has led her back to the classroom.

For the spring semester, Lydia and Roy will resume the roles they had before they stepped up to the plate and served as interims. This college owes a debt of gratitude to them for a job well done. When you see them, please congratulate them and thank them for their service.

Also, our Dean of Student Success, Renée Craig Marius, will be leaving us to serve as Reedley College’s next interim Vice President of Student Services. While this will certainly leave a hole in Student Services and, specifically the library, we all wish her well in this new endeavor.

As we close the fall semester, please know that over the holidays I’ll be working with our external consultants to find highly qualified candidates to serve our college. At convocation, I will share more information with you regarding the details of our plan that will carry us forward until we find our permanent Vice President of Student

Services. Please rest assured that, with your help, the spring semester will be one of our best.

I hope you all enjoy your Winter Break with loved ones and friends. I am looking forward to seeing all of you on January 5th at 8 a.m. in the Old Administration Building. We will start with breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by our Convocation at 8:45. Please note that the agenda for the Convocation is attached. Happy holidays to each and every one of you!
