Learn English as a Second Language

The English for Multi Lingual Students (EMLS) department offers classes and services for students whose first language is NOT English. Classes are offered in BOTH a tuition-free, non-credit format, and in a credit format. The department offers a sequence of courses that can help you improve your English to get a better job, help your children in school, and work towards your degree or certificate goals. The advanced EMLS course will prepare you for English 1A, as well as other content area classes.
Course options include:
- Reading and Writing
- Pronunciation
- Listening and Speaking
- Grammar
Reading and Writing courses are available for students at different levels.
It is highly advised that students interested in these courses complete an Application/Orientation Session with a counselor. Please see below for more information.
Students are advised to contact the Assessment Center to sign up for the placement test. This information and assistance from a counselor will help you select the most appropriate course level.
Assessment CenterHigh School Equivalency Preparation

Tuition free High School Equivalency Preparation Classes (HiSET) are for students who want to get their credential. The HiSET credential is equivalent to a high school diploma in California. The HiSET credential may qualify you for Financial Aid and help you get on track for college and careers.
The class reviews the five examination content areas:
- Language Arts- Reading
- Language Arts- Writing
- Social Science
- Mathematics
- Science
This course is self-paced. Instructors will assess individual skill levels to help the student focus on tutoring weaknesses into strengths.

Job Skills Training Programs

Fresno City College offers a variety of for-credit and non-credit courses in workforce preparation. Student in these courses will have the opportunity to build skills necessary for job-specific technical training.
