CENTRAL VALLEY PROMISE GRANT
A couple of months ago we shared with you the exciting news of the Central Valley Promise. The new initiative will give eligible high school students in the local area the opportunity to begin their college journey at Fresno City College free of charge for the first semester with the goal of eventually transferring to Fresno State to earn a higher education degree.
Today, we have more good news to share with you.
The State Center Community College District has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office to support the launch of the Central Valley Promise. Those funds will be shared by Fresno City College and Reedley College to make this innovative program a reality.
Officially titled the California College Promise Innovation Grant, the grant will be used to promote college going behaviour in high school students who attend local schools in Fresno, Kings Canyon, Sanger, Firebaugh-Las Deltas and Mendota school districts. Central Valley Promise is in direct response to the low college going rates in these areas. The grant will allow Fresno City College to partner with local schools, Fresno State, Fresno County Office of Education, businesses and the community to increase the number of students from these service areas who attend college.
The first group of students to participate in the Central Valley Promise will begin taking classes at FCC in fall 2018.
