Undocumented Student Action Week

The 2025 Undocumented Student Action Week, themed “Together in Purpose, Grounded in Belonging,” offers a series of workshops, presentations, and a resource fair to educate students, faculty, and staff on advocating for the undocumented student population. The event schedule includes:

Monday, Oct. 13 - 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.: “If the system doesn’t offer you a path, build your own. Empowering belonging and action for undocumented students,” plus a meet and greet in the Dream Center.

Tuesday, Oct. 14 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.: “Our Stories are One,” with a resource fair in the Dream Center.

Wednesday, Oct. 15 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.: “Cultivating our tree of belonging,” with a student panel in the Dream Center.

Thursday, Oct. 16 - 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: “Intersection of immigration & the LGBTQ+ community,” in the Pride Center.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Join us on Wednesday, October 15, from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. in the Social Justice Center for a hands-on workshop exploring the cultural significance of cajitas: small, decorated boxes that tell powerful stories. You’ll create your own cajita to express identity, heritage, and personal experiences. The workshop will be led by Dr. Victoria Navarro Benavides and Dr. Ray Ramírez of Chicano-Latino Studies.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 14: Resource Fair, FCC Main Campus - Veterans Square, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.; October 15: West Fresno Center - Lobby, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Discover support services related to domestic and dating violence, mental health, legal aid, housing assistance, and more. This event brings together campus departments and local organizations to raise awareness, provide education, and empower survivors.

October 16: Purple Thursday, Campus Wide, All Day Support survivors and help raise awareness about domestic violence by wearing purple on Purple Thursday! Join us in standing in solidarity and starting conversations that matter during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

October 28: Dating Safety 101, OAB 180 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Hear FCC Title IX experts and SCCCD Police provide information on healthy relationships, warning signs of abuse, and how to stay safe while dating. Learn your rights, available resources, and how to support yourself or a friend.

California Native American Day

Native American Day March

On September 25, a California Native American Day celebration was held at Yokuts Plaza to honor local native tribes. The event started with a procession featuring the indigenous Warriors Flag and included drummers, dancers, cultural practitioners, artists and poets.

Former FCC CIty Singer Scores High

Ralph EdwardsCongratulations to former City Singer Ralph Edwards who turned Four Chairs on The Voice on September 22. He performed Journey’s Lights during the Voice Blind Auditions; this was his 11th time auditioning for the popular show. Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, Michael Bublé and Niall Horan are this season’s judges.

Social Justice Center

The FCC Social Justice Center is hosting a variety of events this month, including: Coffee, Community & Counsel on October 10 from Noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Social Justice Center (OAB 139). Two film screenings are also scheduled, which include The Earth’s Greatest Enemy on October 16 in Forum Hall 103 at 5:30 p.m. and Preschool to Prison on October 22 in the Social Sciences Building, classroom 104 at 5:50 p.m. For a full listing check out their Calendar of Events.

Fall Job Fair

The FCC Fall Job Fair will be held on October 16 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. along the University Mall. Employers from retail, construction and healthcare who will be recruiting for full and part-time permanent and seasonal positions.

Fall Carnival

The ever-popular FCC Fall Carnival will take place on Friday, October 24 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on University Mall. The annual event provides a family friendly and safe environment for neighboring elementary students and their families. Admission is free. Kids of all ages will enjoy free candy, games, performers, photo booths, food trucks, science demonstrations, a haunted house and a pumpkin patch. The Fall Carnival is sponsored by the Student Activities Office and the Student Interclub Council.


FCC Pride Center to Host Speaker

George JohnsonAuthor and speaker George M. Johnson will come to campus on October 15 at 12:00 p.m. in OAB 251 to discuss the intersection of race, sexuality, gender, and education. His books include All Boys Aren’t Blue, We Are Not Broken, and The Flamboyants. FCC English instructor, Dr. Apryl Lewis will moderate.

Pancakes With A Purpose

Free pancakes were served to over 400 students on the morning of September 23. The event was a joint effort with the Ram Pantry, Student Activities and Rivergate Church to increase awareness of the Basic Needs Office on campus and highlight the Student Activities Office.

Pizza With the Presidents

ASG President and College President Whisenhunt

Over 150 West Fresno Center students enjoyed the inaugural Pizza with the Presidents on September 18. Campus President Denise Whisenhunt and Associated Student Government President, Miquel Angel Barrita,
hosted the event to introduce themselves and secure feedback on issues important to students. The two presidents held a second event on October 2 on the main campus.

Welding Instructor Nationally Recognized

Brett CamachoCongratulations to Brett Camacho who received yet another national award at the National FABTECH Conference held a few weeks ago. The welding instructor won the American Welding Society Plummer Memorial Education Lecture Award. His presentation at the conference was entitled, “Connecting the Dots: A Practical Math and Measurement Skill for the Welding and Fabrication Industry.”

Inaugural Parenting Student Conference

The inaugural Parenting Student Conference, hosted by CARE in collaboration with EOPS, NEXTUP and CalWORKs, took place on September 26, with 128 registered students. The event featured an inspiring
keynote address and offered 12 workshops on essential topics like financial literacy, mental health, and transfer information. Attendees benefited from a resource fair with 24 campus and community partners, that included a clothing closet.

Art Space Gallery

 

Two paintings from Art Space GalleryA matter of velocity is a collaborative exhibit bringing together Michael Alvarez’s paintings and the photography and site-specific sculpture of Tomás T. Diaz, each reflecting the Los Angeles cityscape, skate spots and the community in and around El Sereno. The exhibit runs through October 30.

October Concert Performances

The Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Division have a variety of concerts planned during October that include the Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Composers Orchestra, the High School Choral Festival and the
inaugural Mariachi Ensembles Concert. Check out the Performing Arts Calendar for specific dates and times.

Friends of the Arts

Celebrate and support Friends of the Arts at their annual fundraiser, Toasting the Arts, on Friday, October 17. Dinner and entertainment with silent and live auctions, will be held in the OAB East Courtyard. Wine and light hors d’oeuvres begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $75 each or a table of 8 for $1000. Tickets can be purchased online.

Sports Update

The 2025 Ram Football Homecoming is slated for Saturday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Ratcliffe Stadium against the Sacramento City College Panthers. The game will include a special half-time show featuring the annual Parade of Athletes with student athletes representing our 23 Ram athletic teams.

The women’s volleyball team is off to a strong start this season as they gear into conference play this month. The program will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on Friday, October 17 with a pre-match tailgate
starting at 4:00 p.m. in the concourse area of the gym. The team will be playing Coalinga College at 6:00 p.m. with alumni recognition and acknowledgements between sets 2 and 3.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams are in full swing with their respective seasons and have earned solid wins in conference play thus far.

Waterpolo is off to a 4-2 start this season and currently on a two-game winning streak. Conference play began last week, and they are looking forward to being in the thick of things over the next few weeks.
