Last Home Game for Ram Football
Historic Day for Rams Football: Head Coach Tony Caviglia Announces Retirement; Eyes 200th Career Win in Key Rivalry Matchup
Saturday, November 1, at 1:00 p.m., marks a major inflection point in Fresno City College (FCC) football history as Head Coach Tony Caviglia officially retires at the conclusion of the 2025 season. In a dramatic twist of fate, his final regular season home game against archrival College of the Sequoias (COS) Giants (7-1, 3-0) offers him a historic chance to capture his 200th career victory at FCC at Ratcliffe Stadium.
The Milestone and Stakes
Coach Caviglia, who has led the Rams for 27 years, enters today’s 80th meeting against the Giants with 199 wins. A victory would not only secure the monumental milestone but would also make the Rams (4-4, 2-1) bowl eligible and keep them in contention for a Central Valley Conference title or an at-large playoff bid.
Under Caviglia's leadership, the Rams have established remarkable dominance over COS, currently holding a 13-game winning streak against the Giants and an overall record of 22-3 against their rival.
Rivalry History and Current Momentum
The rivalry series, which the Rams lead 49-27-3 overall, began in 1948 when the team, then known as the Visalia College Tartars, defeated the inaugural Fresno Junior College Rams. A notable highlight from the early series includes a 65-yard punt by future NFL Hall of Famer and Rams quarterback Tom Flores in 1954.
Both the No. 16-ranked Rams (JCAB Poll) and the No. 10 Giants have proven they can upset top teams this year. The Rams are coming off a decisive 33-6 victory over No. 14 Monterey Peninsula, while the Giants stunned No. 2 Butte earlier this season.
Gameday Festivities
Adding to the high stakes on the field, today is dedicated to celebrating the Ram football program and its student-athletes.
Sophomore Day: FCC will honor its graduating sophomores playing in their final regular season home game at Ratcliffe Stadium.
Spirit Fest: Halftime will feature the annual Spirit Fest celebration, showcasing cheer squads from numerous area schools alongside FCC’s award-winning cheerleaders and mascot, Sam the Ram. Over 300 students ages 6 -17 will participate in a cheer clinic on Saturday, November 1 from 8:00 – 11:00 am and then return to participate in the halftime performance.
As former Fresno Bee sports editor Bill McEwen once put it, “FCC-COS. Any sport, any time.” Today’s contest promises to be an extraordinary and emotionally charged event.
This season, the Ram home games are live streamed on the FCC YouTube Channel in partnership with CMAC.
