Raised in London, Dr. Gilbert trained as a physical therapist and worked in hospitals for 10 years, specializing in respiratory and intensive care medicine. After completing a teaching certificate and a doctorate in anesthesia, he combined university teaching with clinical work. Moving to California in 2000, Dr. Gilbert joined the Biology Department at Fresno City College in 2004, becoming Department Chair in 2016.
