Nearly all of the 49 cadets in Class #168 who are graduating this Friday are affiliated with agencies and are ready to go to work. The Basic Police Academy Completion Ceremony for Class #168 is October 7 at 3:00 p.m. and will take place at CrossCity Church, 2777 E. Nees Avenue, Fresno.
Keynote speaker Assistant Sheriff Steve McComas of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office will address the cadets. Assistant Sheriff McComas is currently in charge of the Sheriff’s “Custody Division” which encompasses over 800 employees working in three jails, three court houses, coroner’s office and business office. He has been with the department 27 years during which he spent 15 years with the SWAT team.
Certificates will be presented by FCC President Dr. Robert Pimentel, Police Academy director Gary Fief, Kerman PD Chief John Golden, and Police Academy recruit training officer Shant Sheklanian. Awards will be given for Top Shot, Top Physical Training, Top Law Enforcement Skills, Top Academic Student, and Best All Around.
Class #168 began their 25-week training on April 18, 2022. The cadets successfully completed the Academy’s 1030-hour intensive format passing over 42 topical areas including criminal law, investigations, patrol and juvenile procedures, vehicle operations, traffic, emergency management, first aid, professionalism and ethics, physical training, and many other related subjects.
The Police Academy is certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to present the basic academy course. Graduates are eligible to be hired as a police officer, deputy sheriff or district attorney investigator, Department of Insurance Investigator, Department of Motor Vehicles Investigator or Alcohol Beverage Control Investigator anywhere in California. Several other states recognize this certificate for employment.
Of the 49 cadets, 47 have already been offered jobs at local agencies and will be receiving their badges at the ceremony. Most will work for the Fresno Police Department, others will go to police departments in Chowchilla, Kingsburg, Madera, and Merced, and other agencies.
