Fresno City College is seeking an equity-minded Vice President of Student Services that will provide unifying and participatory leadership to a dynamic, complex, and diverse college. The Vice President will have the opportunity to advance the college’s pioneering spirit and cultivate its supportive, innovative community.


Minimum and Desirable Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices;

AND

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study, and seven years of increasingly responsible experience as an academic administrator or in a faculty leadership role, at least two years of which years were in a management capacity involving oversight of instructional programs, preferably in a California community college.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students; and a commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.

The Selection Advisory Committee and College President will consider the following ideal characteristics in their selection of the Fresno City College Vice President of Student Services:

Exhibits awareness of the California community college and has management experience in navigating relevant issues and leading strategic initiatives. Implements policies and practices guided by the diverse needs of students and the community; and promotes rigor that results in high student achievement to advance the mission of the community college.

Demonstrates strong student-centered leadership by addressing institutional barriers and creating a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment that provides multiple pathways to success for all students with a heightened focus on closing the achievement gaps for racially-minoritized and marginalized populations. 

Demonstrates active listening and consistently communicates effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies while using interpersonal skills including tact, patience, transparency, and diplomacy.

Knowledge and evidence of leadership experience in higher education with a demonstrated understanding of efficient and streamlined processes and procedures in fostering an ethos that normalizes anti-racism and equity for racially minoritized students. Demonstrated skills and experience to lead in assigned areas and understands the importance of the Vice President Student Services role the college. Engages in a creative, innovative, and collaborative manner with all constituent groups. Accesses and assimilates information and uses quantitative and qualitative data for decision-making, planning, mobilizing resources, and motivating individuals to creatively overcome challenges facing the District and to make continuous improvements in operations, programming, procedures, and services.

Provide visionary and strategic leadership and guidance as the College adjusts to changing landscapes with a focus on advancing and maintaining quality educational and student support services. Has the resilience and perseverance to address challenges and confrontations. Is deliberate in assessing diverse and conflicting perspectives; brings those perspectives to consensus and successful outcomes. Is an effective, data-informed decision maker and transformational leader of change and will commit to making changes based on data. Is action and results oriented, innovative, and creative, and responds to situations in a timely manner.

Has a clear commitment to collegial consultation and inclusion in important shared decision-making processes. Exhibits a collaborative leadership style with all constituent groups to accomplish critical institutional objectives. Understands the philosophy and practices that are the foundations of AB1725. Works diligently to maintain and increase the environment of engagement and collaboration that is central to the College’s governance structures.

Has strong cultural competency and has demonstrated experience in leading a successful Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) student experience and actualizing a Collegewide culture and climate that normalizes equity with a heightened focus on racially-minoritized and marginalized groups, and diversity, inclusion and accessibility for students, classified professionals, faculty and administrators including but not limited to background and identity factors such as socio-economic, age, gender, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation, LGBQT+, and disability status.

Understands, appreciates, and follows the principles of community involvement and partner engagement in the advancement of the College’s missions and goals. Is aware of own cultural background and how it influences perceptions, values, and practices and effects and shapes the relationship to students and staff. Holds self, and others, accountable, admits mistakes and learns from them.

Exhibits personal/professional ethics and integrity in all behavior and relationships with a strong sense of transparency, fairness, and equity in all decision making.

Inspires trust and confidence through strong motivational skills and authentic engagement. Exhibits outstanding communication skills, a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and enthusiasm for the work of the College. Is a successful team builder with a proven ability to motivate everyone to perform at their best by recognizing the potential in others.

Understands the Vice President’s role in planning, budgeting, assessing, and leading continuous improvement within the authority structure of the College. Demonstrated experience and skills to effectively manage integrated student support services and all resources to advance the purposes of the College. Engages in a creative, innovative, and respectful manner with all stakeholders. Knowledge of California and federal polices, laws and regulations governing community colleges and accreditation expectations.  Stays abreast of best practices and current trends in student services frameworks and models. Engages and supports professional development for their team.  

Salary and Benefits

State Center Community College District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, sick leave, vacation benefits and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) or Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS). The starting annual salary is $192,218 – 216,344 dependent upon experience and qualifications a doctoral stipend of $2,419 is also available.
