How to Obtain a Driver's License

Driving in the United States

International students may be eligible to drive a motor vehicle while residing in the United States. First, they must successfully apply for and receive a driver’s license. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) manages all licenses for driving and automobiles.

Drivers’ License Application Process

  1. Wait 10 days after arriving in the United State to apply for a driver’s license. The 10 day wait allows time for all the government databases to update with your arrival information. 
  2. Schedule an office appointment to take the Written Test.
    1. Under the reason(s) for your visit choose the second option: Apply for, replace, or renew a California DL/ID
  3. Bring the following documents to take the test:
    1. Passport/F-1 Visa/I-94
    2. Current I-20 with Port of Entry Stamp
    3. Social Security Card (If issued one)
  4. Pass the Written Test and receive your Driver’s Permit

  5. Schedule a driving appointment to take the Driving test

  6. Take the Driving Test
